The purpose of this paper is to prove that the wellknown narrative of Lina Bo Bardi’s design for the São Paulo Museum of Art (masp) - up to now considered as a mere consequence of a legal condition imposed by the previous owner of the lot that would come to host the Museum - is not true; it is a ‘tale’ that was developed by the Museum’s direction board. This narration unanimously accepted until today, was intended to account for the most peculiar - but also less justifiable - aspect of the design: the over-seventy-metre span that leaps over the lot, leaving it open and free. Therefore, with this paper the author aims to shed light on the actual intentions of the design: the masp’s domicile is not the consequence of a legal obligation, but the choice of building an architectural icon.
