The figure of Dorotea Sofia has not yet been adequately submitted to the attention of the researchers. She is been studied only about the Succession to the Dukedom of his nephew Charles of Bourbon, and very little is known about her role as Duchess during the preceding phase and above all her relationships with the Pfalz-Neuburg sisters, with which she created a female network of queens consort all over Europe. Morality, religiousness, politics of the magnificence, participation to the dramatisation of power, but also great attention to the preservation of the private spaces of the ducal family through a narrowing of its visibility and accesses: they were the principal fields in which Dorotea Sofia exerted her duchess role, collaborating to maintain an high prestige of the Farnese family, in a world in which the paternalistic function was very strong. In her foreign relationships she tried to preserve the role of her birth family, moving from pro-austrian to pro-spanish positions.
