The organism is a complex system, in which the perception of internal and external environment interacts with memory to fulfil allostasis: surviving to environmental challenges throughout the spontaneous changing of organic functions and subsequent adaptation. Based on previous experiences, the brain elaborates previsions or "labels" capable of explaining the information deriving from perceptual processes: once found the more suited label for the actual situation, the brain allocates his energy through the body, acts and creates the conscious awareness. The hypothesized and then acted labels represent the sense the organism give to what it’s living, and they are nothing but cognitions, perceptions and emotions. In their elaboration a prime role is played by interoception, or perception of the body’s interior, and nociception, or perception of what can be noxious, not painful, to the body. In fact pain is a specific allostatic label: so, it must be addressed evaluating a person in her wholeness.
