During the 1940s and 1950s in Italy, the problems of postwar refugees and decolonization overlapped, and were embodied in the figures of repatriated former settlers. Historians have largely overlooked their importance, underestimating both their ability to forward demands and the diversity of their political orientations. Based on unpublished sources such as archival documents and journals, this article examines the associations created by the former settlers, the people who led them, their political referents, and the different strategies these associations adopted to interact with the country’s institutions.
