The aim of the paper is to retrace the history of the Italian community in Egypt between the fi fties and sixties, through the analysis of diplomatic documents collected in the series Gabinetto del Ministro 1961-63, now at the Historical- Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. These documents were written during the offi cial visit to Cairo, between January 6th and 9th, 1959, of the then-Italian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Amintore Fanfani. They reveal the diffi cult economic and social conditions experienced by the Italian community, along with other foreign communities present at that time Egypt. A consequence of the nationalistic policies implemented by the government of the Egyptian President Gamal ‘Abd al-Nasser.
