This essay qualifies as a territorial biography of Civita di Bagnoregio. It is the complex tale of a duel with death rooted in the geomorphological frailty of the hamlet. It is also the tale of a tenacious community able to fight its tragic destiny for centuries, forging a productive and energetic relation of care with the territory. At least until the time when the push towards industrialization, with the consequent abandon of the fields, forced the dwellers to painfully leave their long-suffering rock. Since the 1960s, Civita was rediscovered from the outside, with new inhabitants and habits that leverage on processes of extensive aestheticization. Nevertheless, it is the amplification of these same processes that catalyse a sensational reinvention of the hamlet, exploitable by the touristic industry that will end up in treacherous territorial commodification.
Keywords: Depopulation; tourism; vital cycles
