The Study Center for the Development of Economic and Cultural Relations with China promoted the study in Italy of the People’s Republic of China. Active during the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s, this association was frequented by political and academic personalities with different orientations and backgrounds. The study center aimed to foster a positive attitude towards Beijing through publications, conferences, and travels. These initiatives were supported by a sizeable number of scholars and intellectuals, sometimes characterized by a deep interest in China and sometimes driven only by curiosity. Particular relevance was attached to bilateral trade with the Prc, considered to be an important opportunity for European countries. The study center experienced several difficulties during these years, but it carried on, nonetheless, following its initial guiding principles and giving voice to a large part of Italy’s attention to China before the diplomatic normalization in 1970.
