The official platform of the a.i.a., the Journal of the American Institute of Architects provides an interesting lens to investigate the multiple discourses on urban design that took shape in the United States during the 1960s, when the efforts of the a.i.a. were focused on the definition of a national program. Articles published by the JAIA between 1960 and 1965 allow to depict an unprecedented moment of intense debate, when urban design started to be introduced in the Architectural Program of American Universities, became part of the set of tools of American practitioners and was translated into the codes of city planning. The article reveals a political and cultural project that tried to use urban design as a way to contrast ideologies of decentralization and trends of suburban sprawl, urban renewal programs and forms of master planning that affected American urbanism at the end of the 1960s.
