The article proposes a reflection on the role that theater and performing arts can play in producing representations of migrants and "otherness", challenging the humanitarian and securitarian emergency frame fueled by media and political rhetoric. In fact, the daily sensationalist and stereotyped images of migrants and refugees showed by media convey social imaginaries in which migrants are depicted as subjects and objects of fear, "victims of emergency tragedies", "potential criminals", "invaders" without an own individuality. A dominant rhetoric that crys-tallizes the imbalances of power between those who have the possibility to narrate and those who are forced to be narrated. The paper starts with a general reflection on the social, political and symbolic role of art in promoting alternative representa-tions of migration. Then, it presents the results of a European project, Atlas of Transitions-New Geographies for a Cross-Cultural Europe, which aims at developing complex social imaginaries through the use of art, experiencing different languages and narratives, new communicative spaces and alternative perspectives on experiential citizenship.
