The studies in History of the University of Catania during the Early Modern Age, until now have not taken much into consideration to a precious source yet: the registers of the «matricole» (i.e. all the students enrolled in the first year of the university course). Starting from this observation, in this essay we’ll take into account the «Registri delle matricole», which is conserved in the Fondo Casagrandi of the Historical Archive of the University of Catania and related to the decades at the turn of 17th and 18th centuries, and we’ll conduct an analysis of a sample year, i.e. 1737, with the support of data-processing and cartographic procedures and cross-references with other types of sources. So, we’ll try to test the value of the information obtained and to consider the opportunity of extending the analysis to all the corpus of the archival documents.

Keywords: Matricole, registers, cartography, students, courses.
