Based on University sources as well as national statistics, the article traces a statistical profile of the student population in liberal age, highlighting the growth in importance of the Catania university in the Sicilian and national panorama, including in the size of the number of its students. The highest growth rates are in the late nineteenth century and then the years between 1917 and 1920. They mainly concern enrollments in the Faculties of Sciences and Letters, thanks also to the expansion of two-year diploma courses.
