The essay reconstructs the scientific and political story of Angelo Majorana, jurist, Rector of the University of Catania and protagonist of local and national politics during the age of Giolitti. Through this character it is possible to understand the path of ascent and formation of the Catanian ruling classes in liberal age, and the role of the University as a "gym" and springboard for important careers.
