This is essay analyzes the impact of the collection of tithes on the rural community, conceived as the product of a continuous social process. Two analytical levels will be considered: neighborhood fellowship and the role of formal territorial institutions (including their representative bodies and their economic investments). By means of this methodology we will try to demonstrate how such substantial levies contributed, in practice, to consolidating the ever elusive collective identity of the individuals and of social groups operating at the local level.
