The study of the documents preserved in the Nonantola Abbey’s archive allows us to grasp the centrality of fiscal assets in the systems of governance of Persiceta (Emilia) between the first half of the eighth century and the first decades of the ninth. From the exarchal rule to the foundation of Nonantola (752) and until the conquest of the Regnum by the Carolingian troops, the alterations in the strategies of administration of the fiscal assets make possible, moreover, to delineate changes that show, already during the last years of the Lombard kingdom, a progressive preference by the public authorities for ecclesiastical institutions as recipients of fiscal assets to the detriment of lay officials and rural communities.
Keywords: Fiscal assest, Governance, Monasteries, Public officials, Lombards, Carolingians.
