This essay analyzes the Napoleonic police, from a local perspective, through the study of the relations between the General Direction of the Tuscan police and the Arno prefecture. From a diachronic point of view the peculiarities of the Florentine case study highlight changes that occurred simultaneously at upper echelons of the imperial police and at a regional level, within the circle of French administrators in charge of maintaining public order in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The constant disputes between the two offices, concerning overlapping jurisdictions and forms of legitimation, significantly reflect the negative effects generated by the so-called guerre des polices, which risked to impair the efficiency of the imperial police system in the annexed departments.
