The "civil ambition" which inspired Andrea Giardina’s historiographical project, Plural Italy: an apology of mongrelization, consists in highlighting aspects and events of Italian history related to the interaction of native and immigrant populations, from ancient to recent times. This leads to the (re)construction of a plural country, regarded as an antidote to a presumed national identity.

Keywords: Plural Italy, anti sovereignism, historiography.
