The choice to conceive a "world history" in a national perspective may seem paradoxical and involves some risks. But perhaps better than the Histoire Mondiale de la France, which constitutes its model, this collective work manages to avoid the most serious of these risks, that of falling back into the "biographical illusion" of a persistent Italian identity. Instead the authors persuasively demonstrate that the history of the peninsula has been continually redefined by the cultural, economic and political relations with the rest of the world.
