In a framework of increasing globalization, healthcare systems are facing new challenges for the governance of patient care. The study has a starting point the analysis of the literature on cross-border healthcare, addressing the issue from the point of view of European, national and regional policies, strategies of healthcare providers and determinants of patient’s behaviour. It aims at focusing attention on the dimensions that the phenomenon of cross-border healthcare has assumed in Italy, through the elaboration of data provided by the Ministry of Health. Finally, relevant implications to public policies are identified, leading to the definition of a multilevel model for the governance of European cross-border healthcare, and ideas for future research are suggested.
