Historians of the contemporary age have been reflecting on the state of the disci-pline for many years now, in Italy and abroad. Among the many issues under consid-eration are: the multiplication of new fields of research; an increasing specialization of studies; the cross-pollination with other social sciences; the emergence of a "global" historiographical debate, favored, in part, by digital technologies; the complex relation with the public debate; the difficult moment, in terms of both resources and role, expe-rienced by human sciences. In recent years, a lively international debate on the per-spectives of historical studies in the new millennium has developed, with the contribu-tion of leading scholars and research institutions. Mondo contemporaneo aims at con-tributing to this debate, inviting eminent historians to discuss, through interviews, the state of historiography on the contemporary age, the role of the historian today, and the challenges that the discipline faces at present. This issue of the journal presents an interview with Federico Romero.
Keywords: Contemporary history, human sciences, interviews, role of the historian, public debate, historiography
