The article demonstrates how academic historians of football no longer compete with traditional sports journalism, but with a new generation of public historians (writers, columnists and freelancers), who carry out well documented and rigorous research. By relegating the competitive dimension to the lower divisions academic historians, the article argues, risk losing touch and becoming increasingly irrelevant.
