The case of Romano di Lombardia - standing across the provinces of Bergamo, Brescia and Cremona - tells about the effort of a small town to build a path of revitalization and enhancement as opposed to the vision of development that nowadays prevails within the suburban territories of the Po Valley megalopolis. Since 2016, the integration of plan and projects, the attention paid to safeguarding ‘vacant-lands’ and the key role given to the reorganization and maintenance of city infrastructures as a support to the quality of daily life have been the salient features of this particularly articulated planning experience. However, the attempt to build a perspective of urban balance instead of urban growth clashes with evident difficulties that, to be tackled, require a radical change of direction in urban planning.
Keywords: Po Valley metropolis; municipal planning; new town plan
