The essay aims at offering a reading path of the History of Labour in the Early Modern Age, edited by Renata Ago. The purpose is to prompt legal scholars’ attention on a distant and far history like that one of the "ancien regime" beyond mere curiosity and occasional interest. The reading path is open-ended and endeavors to promote a new start, highlighting the relevant keys one can use to rethink the issues Labour Law and Social Security are confronted to at present and to tackle those theories advocating the end of social protection as a consequence of the end of work as we knew it in the Nineteenth Century (dependent, local insourced, stable and continuous). At the same time, the essay wishes that the encounter with the legal scholar may summon in the historian the chance to investigate new grounds of applied research, en-riching the investigation tool kit of the early modern regulatory activity, without producing a distorting and performative effect.
Keywords: Early modern; Guilds; Craft workshop; Apprenticeship; Working time; Pay; Pro-fessions; Female work.
