Andreotti, Italian Foreign Minister, former and future Prime Minister, shocked the German political world with his public statements of September 1984 when he strongly opposed the reunifi cation of Germany. As promoter of Détente, he feared serious dangers for peace if the German reunifi cation had taken place against the Soviet Union and outside a European framework. However, despite not foreseeing it like François Mitterrand, he accepted the reunifi cation later when the Ussr agreed and it was linked to the creation of the Economic, Monetary and European union as well to the strengthening of the Csce. These conditions sealed the end of Europe’s division and the progress of European unifi cation that were priorities of his policy.
