The clinical case is based on the integration of individual and family psychotherapeutic interventions. The personal and clinical history of Mary underlines the importance of welcoming and amplifying redundant emotions to later reconstruct their hidden network of meanings. In order to achieve this, we needed a family. The journey through the myths and family has allowed to recognize, explain and finally re-negotiate the meanings of the emotions, so as to create a new space of freedom. It was possible to define the mandate assigned to each family member and introduce new elements. Family therapy, through the creation of metaphorical images and narrative tools, allowed the patient to visualize, for the first time, a future that would set her free, overcoming hate and at the same time preserving the bond with her family. Individual therapy has supported these transformations that, without a shared family space, would have created friction which would have been difficult to get rid of without pain.
Keywords: Psychotherapy; metaphorical tools; family myth; transgenerational mandate; hate
