Through the discussion of Mary’s case, we aim at providing a new perspective on how to intervene based on theoretical principles of the modern theory of attachment and the applications of sensorimotor therapy. Our main hypothesis is that Mary’s depression is caused by the attachment relationship, which led to the development of an identity embodied in a number of dysfunctional postural and emotional schemes, thus hampering the expression of her true identity. The sensorimotor psychotherapy focuses on the recovery of blocked somatic patterns, in an attempt to repair the missing experience of attachment.

Keywords: Attachment; sensorimotor psychotherapy; window of tolerance; somatic resources; body therapy.
