Forgetfulness is usually considered as a memory impairment, although experimental evidence showed that it is a central element within cognitive processes and not simply a failure of memory. Human memory makes a great number of “errors”, that is distortions or lapses; however, these errors do not impair the process but, on the contrary, make retrieval more efficient. These considerations suggest to consider memory as a complex process in which the recall of information is not crucial. Rather, human memory has a predictive function based on our past experience. In sum, convergent items of evidence indicate that, in everyday life, the act of recall results from a very complex process involving modifications, transformation and forgettings that are necessary for the adaptive and future-oriented memory function.
