The cultural relations between Italy and Romania in the years 1950-1989 found in the academic Alexandru Balaci (1916-2002) one of their most assiduous and visible advocates. Balaci was professor of Italian literature at the University of Bucharest and the author of an impressive written production which aimed to promote Italian literature and language (introductions, monographies, anthologies, translations, dictionaries). Therefore, this article aims to interpret Balaci’s written production and his diplomatic mission in Rome in the perspective of his privileged relations with Italy, useful in pre-serving the prestige of Italian studies during the Romanian communist regime, but also to extend the knowledge of Italian culture in Romania and of Romanian culture in Italy. The article reveals the picture of a mediator, one who knew how to balance the enthu-siasm of a cultural figure with the inherent compromises imbedded in his PCR mem-bership.
