In the Italian civil calendar, the recent celebrations of Giorno del Ricordo (Memory Day), February 10, were characterised by a political debate between right and left, by ideological public discourses, and by an instrumental use of memory. This contribution highlights the growing difficulty of the right’s public narrative to accept the historiographical results about the questions of the Foibe (1943-1945) and of the Istrian and Dalmatian exodus in the aftermath of the Second World War. Instead, it promotes a new interpretation of the historical events, using all kinds of anti-Slavic and anti-Communist stereotypes and languages, in order to remove the crimes of Italian Fascism from the public memory. The article focuses on the case of Trieste, symbolic place of counterposed memories of the 20th century, and able to stimulate the interest of the international historiography.
