The author discusses the relationship between historiography and public history in the construction of a "republican sentiment" in Italy after the Second World War. New research paths and sources are investigated in order to reconstruct historical-cultural narratives that are able to combine languages, symbols and civil rituals in the history of "republican patriotism". The date and the anniversary of the birth of the Republic - June 2 - become the occasion to prefigure the "lived history" of several generations of men and women. The idea and the image of the Republic return to the centre of the civil calendar, in its continuous and shifting relationship between stories (both individual and collective) and public memories.
