The discussion is made up of three parallel readings, independent from each other, on a very important book by Piero Brunello. Maurizio Bertolotti’s contribution highlights the "complex and open-ended nature of a narration" that shows some original aspects of 1848 in Venice, from the key role of the popular classes (with the stakes of memory) to the ambiguous meanings of the word "Republic" and national sentiments (divided between Venetian and Italian identity). Giovanni Levi emphasizes Brunello’s attempt to explore "the role of individuals in collective events". He also assesses the aftermath of the revolution and takes into account the complexity of this event."Gian Luca Fruci focuses on the admirable polyphonic composition of the screenplay Colpi di scena, a "multifocal reconstruction" that makes use of a rich set of iconographic, but also sound and material sources, wisely analyzed by the author and able to bring out new aspects of a revolution.
