The article construes the relationships between security and defense, underlining their different historical origins and the current points of convergence. Starting with an analysis of the main constitutional and European dispositions on the subject-matter, as well as of the different dimensions connected to these legal concepts, the article further explores the evolving trends of the relationships between security and defense, also in light of the most recent global challenges (international terrorism, management of humanitarian crises, and both the pandemic and environmental emergency). Both constitutional and European caselaw, as well as the evolution that security services have undergone following the reform enacted by law n. 124/2007, seem to indicate that this convergence process may find a first landing point in the concept of "national security".
