The evolution of viticulture and the wine industry in the Oltrepò Pavese region is characterized from the 50s to the 80s by the numerous changes regarding grape growing and the production and trade of wine. In that period, alongside a series of critical factors, there are positive factors such as an improvement in the quality of the product and the first forms of protection of the areas of origin. These aspects allowed local production to reach a much higher qualitative level, in particular from the 80s onwards, compared to previous trends which had mainly focused on increasing the quantity. The same decades saw the standardization of wines which allowed Oltrepò to distinguish itself regionally and nationally, especially in the production of classic method spumante. The work of Antonio Giuseppe Denari and Bianchina Alberici, emblematic figures in winemaking in the region, enabled the analysis of various aspects which characterized the development of winemaking during years of great social and economic changes.
Keywords: Oltrepò Pavese, wine making 50s-80s, phytopharmaceuticals and fertilizers, typical wines, farming changes.
