Official data show that from 1939 to 1945 rice fields shrank significantly from 156.824 hectares to 97.035 hectares in Italy and from 44.430 to less than 23.000 in the province of Pavia. Approximately 50% of Italian rice production was exported. Farms were forced to employ more workers than actually needed in order to tackle unemployment; two thirds of rice growers were tenants who hardly managed to make a profit in periods of economic crisis. During the Korean war (1950-1953), an important rice exporter such as Korea had to temporarily stop exports, and as a result, the area of cultivation for rice increased both in Italy and in the province of Pavia. However, problems quickly resurfaced at the end of the war in 1954 and, in 1956, the Ministry of Agriculture reduced the area of cultivation for rice to 140.000 hectares. In the late 1950s and early 1960s an increasing number of agricultural workers found jobs in manufacturing and in 1962 the limitations previously imposed to the area of cultivation for rice were repealed, as rice growing started a process of profound transformation, facing the challenges of mechanization and the European Common Market.
