Through an unpublished private correspondence, the essay reconstructs the story of a Modica family of small landowners, whose existence was turned upside down by the outbreak of the WW1. The themes are typical of war writings: separation, the distance between family members, fear, but also the sprouting of new concepts of homeland, territorial unity and participation, understood with a great variety of meanings and feelings. Above all, the fundamental, irreplaceable, vital need to communicate emerges, which replaces the bonds of paper and ink for physical and material ones.
