Despite the high number of men involved, personal and social-political events brought to "relegate into the shadow" the memory of captivity lived by thousands of Italian soldiers during the Great War, re-discovered only around the end of the previous century, thanks in particular to the possibility to analyze documents which contained kind of popular writing, collected and stored inside public and private archives. By examining published and un- published sources, the author has reconstructed the experience of captivity lived by some soldiers of Lombardia (Angelo Rognoni, Giuseppe Resegotti, Giulio Salaroli, and Carlo Co- lombo), from the capture at Caporetto till the return to Italy, describing the terrible way of living inside the Austro-Hungaric and German Empires’ lager, above all in Cellelager, reserved by the officers only, and lingering to reflect about the importance of memory and to the reasons that brought to "forget" such events.
Keywords: prisoners, Caporetto, defection, hunger, cold, Cellelager, memory.
