Faced with recent traumatic events such as the pandemic and war, the individual comes into contact with their own decadence and puts defence mechanisms in place to avert catastrophic distress and emotional disorganisation. Under these conditions, there may be a dispersal of parts of self that is destructuring in nature. Negation, denial, paranoid-schizoid mechanisms, ambiguity, seem to be the most commonly used psychic defences. But at the same time, new and other internal paradigms may be developed that create new and other forms of relation-ship. Based on clinical examples, the author proposes an analysis of the effects of the pandemic period in the individual’s unconscious, while stressing that careful psychological listening and a thorough and courageous analysis of the changes that are taking place internally can en-courage the proper processing of the trauma and initiate the possibility of reinventing oneself.
