With the concept of geoeconomics, Edward Luttwak indicates what he believed would become the hegemonic model of expression of the unavoidable interstate conflict in the post-Cold War world. This article, however, proposes to use the concept of geoeconomics in a different way, limiting its application to the more specific set of economic and commercial relations that are established with geopolitical and potentially coercive purposes. Briefly reviewing the key historical events that generated the crisis of the liberal order, it is shown how an analysis of the widespread return to geo-economic relations between states can provide a privileged observatory to better understand the competition for (re)defining the essential infrastructures, legal standards and technologies that will give shape and substance to economic and military development in the coming decades
