This article aims to publish an unknown text by Gabriele Cesano, written approximately in the 1540s, which provides an unusual version of the so-called Castrametatione of Polybius, i.e. the description of a Roman army camp. This text constitutes a free translation and a free interpretation of the sections of the sixth book of Polybius’ Histories that illustrate how the legions used to build a Roman field camp, as well as to the description of the organization of the Roman army. As Cesano himself explains, this piece of writing was supposed to be read while watching a "painting" of the plan of the camp. The article argues that the latter might be identified with the painting once located in the gallery of Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este at Fontainebleau (now lost). Finally, it is argued that the painting might be the work of architect Sebastiano Serlio, who is known to have painted similar works for the French king Francis I.
