Since 2008, the topic of business crises has become central to the political and academic debate. An analysis of the minutes of the tables set up at the Ministry of Economic Development shows that most of them are attributable to structural aspects of the Italian economic-productive system. What is needed, therefore, is an appropriate industrial policy to tackle these phenomena from the point of view of safeguarding employment and strengthening the produc-tive fabric through public intervention instruments. While the lack of industrial policies is causing most of the company crises, the existing public intervention instruments (Safeguard Fund and Large Enterprises Fund), although burdened by limitations and criticalities, have in some cases proved useful. The trade unions’ power of intervention appears to be limited to information and consultation, with no possibility of affecting the unilateral choices of companies.
Keywords: Enterprise crises; Industrial policies; Reindustrialisation; Public intervention; Trade unions.
