Within the history of Brazilian architecture, the 1930s - characterized by the presence in power of an authoritarian nationalist government - coincided with the progressive emergence of modern architecture in Brazil. In this political and cultural context, the headquarters of the Ministry of Education and Public Health of Rio de Janeiro (1935-1943) inaugurated a large array of public buildings that would have adopted the Modern as a representation of the state: a trend that culminated in the experience of the Brasilia foundation in the second half of the1950s. The story of the realization of the mesp, from its international design contributions to its current state of conservation, is emblematic and introduces the theme of the protection of 20th century works in Brazil.
Keywords: Brazilian modern architecture; Ministry of Education and Public Health (mesp); restoration of the Modern
