This paper discusses the current open challenges for the governance of Euro-Mediterranean wetlands, i.e. the area covered by eu Member States bordering the Mediterranean sea, based upon their environmental and socio-economic features and the multiple ecosystem services they can provide, and consequent stakes that are involved. The Wetland Contract is introduced as a community of practice tool, able to effectively integrate policies and engage stakeholders at local scale. Through a literature review and an assessment of 16 eu-funded projects a methodological approach for contractualized decision-making is offered, together with a set of recommendations for a further development and dissemination of the Wetland Contract in the Euro-Mediterranean area.
