In the last decade the Veneto Region has favoured and stimulated the development of participatory governance paths called River Contracts, aimed at protecting wetlands, raising the awareness of local communities, and local development. The Iuav University of Venice has activated a Wetland Contract for the North Lagoon of Venice, which took place between 2019 and 2021. Despite the fact that the participatory process had to face difficulties linked to the vastness of the study area, the limits imposed by the Covid-19, and the plurality of stakeholders active in the area, thanks to the Contract the first and fundamental signs of empowerment and commitment of the local communities have been detected.
