Facing the exponential increase in diversity in today's social contexts, including the Italian ones, labour markets are now increasingly complex and heterogeneous. Yet strong inequalities in access to highly qualified professional paths persist, with levels of occupational segregation that show no signs of diminishing, especially for people of foreign origin. It therefore becomes crucial to reflect on those elements capable of affecting the construction of human and cultural capital, opening up processes of valorisation of the skills thus acquired. Starting from qualitative research investigating the presence of social mobility paths among people of foreign origin, the article critically analyses the elements that influence access to high training paths. Focusing on the dimensions that appear most crucial - the family of origin, the teachers and the social capital - the contribution proposes an interdisciplinary look, questioning the social work perspective. On the basis of the empirical evidence, it reflects on the key functions that the social worker could perform in order to support pathways to inclusion, highlighting its role in actions aimed at structural change and policy practice.
Keywords: immigrant descendants; human capital; educational pathways; social referencing; policy practice.
