This paper examines the Ulrich Beck’s concept of “emancipa- tory catastrophism”, and the possible positive effects caused by the changes taking place in contemporary social structures following recent catastrophic events (pandemic, wars, climate change). The catastrophe, according to Beck, implies not only unpredictability and uncontrollability of the near future, but also a new space for action to imagine alternatives. And the possibility of an alternative becomes concrete and viable precisely because of the impact that the changes of recent years have had on society. The paper examines a hid- den emancipatory side effect, capable of conditioning the near future, which concerns the financing of the European public debt of NextGenerationEU.
