This contribution critically engages with Italian and international history scholarship on the environmental dimension of Italian fascism. It shows its innovative character and potential developments, and it discusses its limits. Apart from a limited number of pioneering studies on industrialisation plans and industrial pollution, an environmental history of Italian fascism has developed only over the last fifteen years. Such scholarly outputs have evolved along the following trajectory: they shifted from a focus on “green” topics, propaganda, and state inter- ventions to attempts to integrate the environmental transformation into the complex canvas of fascist politics and practices.

Keywords: environmental history, Italian fascism, autarchy, reclamation, Italian colonialism, environmental humanities
