The dossier we are presenting to our readers consists of three essays. It proposes some interpretations of Carmine Pinto’s book, La guerra per il Mezzogiorno. Italiani, borbonici, briganti 1860-1870 (Laterza, Bari-Roma, 2019), which has recently become a reference point for a rich season of studies focused on brigandage. Giulio Tatasciore identifies as the historiographical key to the volume under discussion the relevance of the political datum of violence and the centrality of the war paradigm. Laura Di Fiore focuses instead on the forms of legitimism and counter-revolution that characterized the decade of Italian unification. Pedro Rújula López sets brigandage in southern Italy within the framework of 19th century counter-revolutionary mobilization in the Mediterranean area, showing that the common background of these experiences was monarchical patriotism.
Keywords: Brigandage, Violence, Italian Risorgimento, Police, Mezzogiorno.
