Exploiting retrospective information from the Social Condition and Integration of Foreign Citizens survey (Istat 2011-12), the article ex-plores the association between undocumented experience after the en-trance in Italy and various aspects of the first job: search duration, finding methods (including different types of contacts), and occupa-tional qualification. Findings reveal that, unless no significant relation-ship exists between legal status and speed of accessing the first job, ir-regular migrants are more likely to use networks of friends and ac-quaintances to find the first occupation. Furthermore, for both male and female migrants, the undocumented experience is proved to be as-sociated with the access to poorly qualified jobs.
