The essay focuses on the future as a discourse on the polis: on politics as the place where the community develops its self-awareness, shapes its civic ties and values, and designs its government system. The empirical ground of this analysis is the juxtaposition of different Italian constitutional cultures and their respective models of "imagined society". A juxtaposition marked by the vibrant dialectic be-tween law and politics and its contribution to the re-foundation of the social order. On this basis, and against the backdrop of a new international civil war, the debate about the Constitution laid the foundations for a pragmatic convergence be-tween Italy’s mass political parties within a framework of values that was not prejudicial to their respective, often conflicting, historical strategies.
