The article explores how Italian Christian Democrats imagined and debated the future of Italy between the early 1960s and 1968, in light of the country’s rap-id modernization during the years of the economic "miracle", the "Opening to the left" and the center-left governments. At the time, the issue of reforms and plan-ning gained pivotal importance in the Italian political debate. The article offers a threefold perspective. In the first place, it analyzes the post-war era, up to the 1970s, as a global "golden age" for planning. Against this backdrop, it focuses on the debate on planning that took place within Italian Christian Democracy at the time, especially at the 1961 and 1962 conferences in San Pellegrino, identifying the diverse and often conflicting views that contributed to shape CD’s planning policies. Secondly, the article examines the electoral propaganda effort of the par-ty up to the mid-1960s, which was centered on such themes as progress, moderni-zation and the future. Finally, it takes into consideration the attitudes of public opinion towards the center-left governments and CD’s political proposal - a perspective which also allows to explore the expectations of Italians and their hopes for the future through the 1960s.
