The article analyses the Studi intorno alla Lombardia negli ultimi trent’anni (Paris, 1846), ascribed to Cristina di Belgiojoso. Through the analysis of its editions, it is suggested that the author was Carlo de Castillia, held responsi- ble for jailing Confalonieri. It is the opportunity of revising the insurrection of 20 April 1814, which brought the overthrown of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy. The part played by de Castillia, who charged Confalonieri of being the unintentional instigator of Austria’s return, suggests the relevance of the Napoleonic years in the birth of the national movement in Lombardy and sheds new light on the struggles within patriotism in the years preceding the revolution of 1848.
